Workers covered by a Culinary Union contract benefit from one of the best health insurance plans in the country - and it costs you nothing to cover you and your family. The Union's insurance plan also covers your spouse (or same-sex domestic partner) and children at no additional charge. Nothing will come out of your paycheck. Workers qualify for Culinary Insurance after working at least an average of 112 hours per month for 3 consecutive months (a total of 336 hours). After a one month administrative period you and your family are covered by the plan. To maintain coverage, you must work at least an average of 112 hours per month. Once qualified, if you should fall short of hours the plan will notify you of the shortage and you will be given the opportunity to pay the difference. You must also actually work 224 hours per year to remain eligible. (It is very important to notify the insurance office of all address changes.) Workers covered by the plan that quit, or are terminated, will have insurance for up to four months after ending employment (Unless they are eligible without a waiting period because a new property opens, and they quit working soon after the opening). The plan offers a disability program and continued coverage if you are injured and cannot work. "Steady-extra" and part-time workers are also covered by the Union's health insurance plan, provided they work the required numbers of hours. Our contracts require the Union employers to pay the full cost of each worker's health insurance. It is very expensive for the employers to provide us with this outstanding plan, but our strength as a union has won us this important benefit - and only a strong union can continue to protect your health plan. "I had lost a child to cancer so I came to Las Vegas in 1993 from Portland, Oregon, to get a job with good health benefits. In June of 1997 I found out I had a very rare liver disease. I was rushed to UCLA Medical Center. Even though I was dying I was told that if my insurance didn't preapprove my liver transplant, which could cost from $250,000 to $400,000, I would not get on the transplant list. My husband called Culinary Insurance and got all the paperwork faxed to UCLA. The next day a liver was found and six months later I was back to work. I haven't had any rejection and Culinary pays for my anti-rejection medication. It's a miracle that we came here, or I wouldn't be alive."- Linda Helton, Food Server, Luxor The Culinary Health Fund office is located at 1901 Las Vegas Blvd. South, Suite 107
