Taste of EBONY Recognizes Chef Sterling Burpee, Chief Culinary
Officer Of Culinary Training Academy in Las Vegas
As One Of The Top African-American Chefs In The Country
Chef Sterling Burpee,
Chief Culinary Officer of
the Culinary Training
Academy, will be one of 25
African-American Chefs in the
country honored at the first
annual Taste of Ebony,
created by Ebony Magazine
on Monday, October 23,
2006 at the Metropolitan
Pavilion in New York City.
The culinary extravaganza
will feature leading African-American Chefs and Wine Experts in the country and
expects attendance of over 600 guests. Star chef Marcus
Samuelsson, owner of Aquavit and Riingo restaurants in
Manhattan, will serve as chairperson and culinary advisor
of the premier event.
The evening will begin with a tribute to Chef Leah
Chase, the 83-year-old doyenne of black chefs around the
world whose 65-year-old landmark establishment, Dookey
Chase Restaurant in New Orleans, suffered severe
damage from Hurricane Katrina.
“We are extremely excited to join with the Taste of Ebony
in congratulating Chef Burpee and the other black Chefs
from around the country for their many accomplishments
to the culinary industry,” said Steven Horsford, Chief
Executive Officer of the Culinary Training Academy. “Chef
Burpee’s more than 30 years of dedication, passion, and
experience in the field of the culinary arts has earned him
the great distinction as one of the top Chef’s in the
country and we are extremely proud of his work.”
Chef Sterling Burpee started his promising career in the
culinary arts with an apprenticeship under Master Chef
George McNeil. He brings an incredible amount of
experience and knowledge to the newly created role of
Chief Culinary Officer of the Culinary Training Academy.
His career experiences include Executive Chef Buffet at
Wynn Las Vegas, Executive Sous Chef of the Mes A Mis
room at the Sands Casino and Senior Sous Chef at the
Marriott Marquis in Time Square, New York.
The Culinary Training Academy (CTA) is an
internationally recognized labor-management partnership
between the Culinary Union, Bartenders Union and 30 major resort/gaming properties in Las Vegas. The CTA
trains thousands of employees for work in entry-level
positions as guest room attendants, bus persons, kitchen
workers, porters and stewards. The CTA also trains
incumbent workers to qualify for outstanding careers as
food servers, professional cooks, gourmet food and wine
servers, and sommeliers.
