“COLORS” New
Restaurant
Opened By 911
Survivors

The surviving union employees from Windows on the World, the 107th-floor restaurant obliterated in the World Trade Center attacks, opened a new upscale restaurant just a short distance from ground zero. “Colors” is owned by the workers and offers a menu sprinkled with food from the staff’s 22 native nations.
This is long-awaited good news for UNITE HERE Local 100 who lost 73 of their friends and co-workers on Sept. 11, 2001. Only those who weren’t working at the time of the attacks survived.
The Colors’ bartenders, waiters, bus staff, chefs and dishwashers all have a stake in the restaurant, financed with about $2.2 million from a variety of sources (the Italian food consortium Good Italian Food (GIF); the Nonprofit Finance Fund; religious groups, and others). Each Colors staff also spent at least 100 hours working for the Restaurant Opportunities Center (ROC-NY), a Manhattan cooperative organization that raised another half million dollars. We wish them the best and applaud their efforts in going forward with a new and innovative business venture.
