Definition of Seniority

House Seniority vs. Classification (Bidding) Seniority
House seniority is an employee’s length of continuous service in years, months and days from the employee’s most recent date of hire into the bargaining unit as a regular or steady extra employee by the Employer.
To make this very simple house seniority is used for all purposes except shift bids.

Classification (bidding) seniority is an employee’s length of continuous service in years, months and day from the employee’s most recent date of hire into or transfer into his/her present classification on a full-time basis.
Classification seniority is used for one purpose and one purpose only and that is to bid for a shift in your classification.

It is very important to remember the following:
Any time you choose to use your bidding rights you will be locked into the shift you have bid on for 6 months with no exception to becoming un-locked.
For example:
If you bid on a temporary shift and it ends before your 6 month lock has expired you will carry that lock with you to where you are being placed.
If you choose to bid on an LOA (Leave of Absent) and that person returns at any time even if the shift was scheduled to be at least 6 months but turns out to be only 3 months, you will carry the remainder of your lock with you to where you are placed.
If you bid on a new shift and the shift or new entity closes for any reason or your shift is eliminated and no longer exist, you will be placed into layoff (if you have seniority you will be able to bump) but no matter where you are placed you will take your

lock with you.
It’s simple: You will remain locked if you choose to use your bidding rights with no exception to the rule!!!
Also, remember St. Extra’s have no bidding rights. Employees placed into layoff status are required by contract to be placed into the next available full-time shift after shift bidding is completed, but will not be locked into it unless they are carrying a lock with them from a previous bid.
