House Seniority vs. Classification (Bidding) Seniority
House seniority is an employee’s length of continuous
service in years, months and days from the employee’s most
recent date of hire into the bargaining unit as a regular or
steady extra employee by the Employer.
To make this very simple house seniority is used for all
purposes except shift bids.
Classification (bidding) seniority is an employee’s length
of continuous service in years, months and day from the
employee’s most recent date of hire into or transfer into his/her
present classification on a full-time basis.
Classification seniority is used for one purpose and one
purpose only and that is to bid for a shift in your classification.
It is very important to remember the following:
Any time you choose to use your bidding rights you will be
locked into the shift you have bid on for 6 months with no
exception to becoming un-locked.
For example:
If you bid on a temporary shift and it ends before your 6
month lock has expired you will carry that lock with you to
where you are being placed.
If you choose to bid on an LOA (Leave of Absent) and that
person returns at any time even if the shift was scheduled to
be at least 6 months but turns out to be only 3 months, you
will carry the remainder of your lock with you to where you are
placed.
If you bid on a new shift and the shift or new entity closes for
any reason or your shift is eliminated and no longer exist, you
will be placed into layoff (if you have seniority you will be able
to bump) but no matter where you are placed you will take your
