Being young and
adventurous, Tom
decided that he
needed to be a part
of the glitz and
glamour of Las
Vegas. He made
his way from his
hometown of Akron,
Ohio by hitchhiking
across country to
Las Vegas with his
only possession
being a backpack.
The economy in Akron was failing due to
companies moving the tire industry out of the
area and since Tom had an uncle living in Las
Vegas, it seemed like the place for a new start.
Tom landed his first job in Las Vegas in 1976 at Caesars Palace where he remained for 10 years. He worked in a number of classifications |
from Apprentice Bartender to Bartender, and also as a Beverage Manager. Eventually Tom
made his move over to the Rio Hotel working his
first year as an Apprentice Bartender, then being
promoted to a Banquet Bartender where he has
remained for the past 12 years.
Working a number of years non-union caused
Tom to become active in the organizing process
at the Rio where he served on the Organizing
Committee and was present during the contract
negotiations. He has also been instrumental in
negotiating settlement agreements regarding
the flair bartender issues and seniority.
As a Shop Steward, Tom went to Atlantic City
in 2004 to meet firsthand with the workers
showing them our support and informing them
about the union and benefits of being
represented by having a union contract.
Tom is married to Leah who is also a Shop
Steward at the Rio and works as a Banquet
Server. They have a son (Alan) and daughter
(Rachel). In his spare time, he enjoys music and
sports. |
